Romance in the dunes
Why spend your honeymoon in the Sahara?
You already have beaches and mountains at home – what New Zealand cannot give you is the Sahara. At our camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes there are no roads, no traffic and hardly any light after dark, only sand, silence and stars. It is a wonderful place to rest after the wedding and simply be together.
Flights from Auckland or Christchurch to Marrakech or Fes usually connect via a hub such as Dubai, Doha, Istanbul or a European city, so many Kiwi couples add a stopover on the way. From either city we arrange a private driver over the Atlas Mountains to Merzouga, and our family, who have lived here for generations, takes care of the rest: the transfer, a beautifully prepared tent, a private dinner and small surprises.
- Private tent with its own bathroom and hot shower
- Honeymoon decoration with flowers, candles and lanterns
- Romantic dinner served on a dune or in a private corner of the camp
- Optional deluxe tent with air-conditioning for the warm months

A day to remember
A typical honeymoon programme
Most couples arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon. After a mint tea in the village, you ride to the camp on camels as the sun goes down, or take a short 4×4 transfer if you prefer. Your decorated tent is ready when you arrive.
In the evening we serve a private candle-lit dinner – soup, salads, a slow-cooked tagine and fresh fruit – followed by Berber drums around the fire, or simply a quiet night under the stars if you prefer. In the morning, climb the dune behind the camp to watch the sunrise before breakfast.
- Afternoon: arrival in Merzouga and welcome tea
- Sunset: camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes
- Evening: private dinner, music and stargazing
- Morning: sunrise on the dunes and breakfast
- Optional second day: 4×4 trip to nomads, Khamlia and desert lakes, or a quad ride
Choose your comfort
Luxury tent or deluxe tent with air-conditioning?
Our luxury tents have a real double bed, quality linen and a private bathroom with hot shower and toilet. They are the most popular choice for honeymoon couples from October to May, when the desert nights are cool and the days are pleasant.
From June to September the days in Merzouga can be very hot. For these months we recommend our deluxe tents with air-conditioning, so you can rest in the afternoon and sleep comfortably. Ask us for availability and the current price when you send your dates.
Make it longer
Ideas for a longer honeymoon in Morocco
Many couples combine the desert with a few nights in Marrakech or Fes and a private drive through the Atlas Mountains, the Dades Gorges and the Todra Gorge. We can organise a private driver for the whole trip, so you travel at your own pace and stop wherever you like.
- 2 nights in the desert to enjoy the camp without rushing
- A private desert tour from Marrakech or Fes
- A slow morning with breakfast on the dunes
- A visit to a Berber family and a cooking class
