What is the best way to get to Merzouga?
There is no train to Merzouga and no airport in the village, so most travellers arrive by road. The best option depends on your time, budget and how much of Morocco you want to see on the way. From Singapore, flights usually connect via Casablanca or a European hub, after which you can continue by domestic flight or by road to the desert.
If you want freedom and beautiful stops, drive yourself or hire a private driver. If you travel on a budget, take the Supratours or CTM bus. If you are short on time, fly to Errachidia and continue by taxi or private transfer – about 2 hours by road.
- Most flexible: rental car or private driver
- Cheapest: Supratours or CTM bus
- Fastest: a flight to Errachidia plus a transfer
- Easiest for first-timers: a private desert tour
Your options compared
- Rental car – Freedom to stop in the Atlas, the gorges and the oases. Paved roads all the way.
- Bus – Supratours and CTM run daily from Marrakech and Fes – long but very cheap.
- Flight – Fly to Errachidia (ERH), about 130 km and 2 hours from Merzouga.
- Grand taxi – Shared or private taxis from Errachidia, Erfoud and Rissani.
- Private transfer – Door-to-door with a local driver, from any city or airport.
- Desert tour – 3 to 5-day tours from Marrakech or Fes with a night in Merzouga.

Renting a car to Merzouga
Driving is one of the best ways to discover southern Morocco. The roads to Merzouga are paved, so you do not need a 4×4 to reach the village and our camp meeting point. From Marrakech the classic route crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then continues via Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, Erfoud and Rissani. From Fes you drive through Ifrane, Azrou and Midelt, then down the beautiful Ziz Valley to Errachidia, Erfoud and Rissani.
We recommend splitting the drive from Marrakech with a night in the Dades or Todra gorges. Fill up the tank in the bigger towns, avoid driving after dark, and watch for speed controls near villages. You can leave your car safely in Merzouga village while you ride to the camp by camel or 4×4.
- International car rental companies and local agencies at Marrakech, Fes and Casablanca airports
- A normal car is fine; a 4×4 is only needed to drive into the dunes
- Free parking in Merzouga village when you stay with us
- Tip: download offline maps – the phone signal is weak in some mountain areas
Supratours and CTM buses to Merzouga
Two national companies serve the area. Supratours (the bus company of the national railway ONCF) runs from Marrakech and from Fes to Merzouga village. CTM serves Erfoud and Rissani, from where you continue by grand taxi. The day bus from Marrakech leaves in the morning and arrives in the evening after about 12 hours; from Fes there is usually an overnight service that arrives early in the morning.
Tickets are inexpensive – roughly 200 to 300 MAD one way – and can be bought online or at the bus stations. Bring your passport, arrive 30–45 minutes early and expect a small fee for big luggage. Schedules change by season, so always check the current timetable on the official Supratours and CTM websites before you travel, and tell us your arrival time so we can meet you.
- Supratours: Marrakech and Fes to Merzouga village
- CTM: to Erfoud or Rissani, then grand taxi
- Book a few days ahead in high season
- Ask us to pick you up at the bus stop
Flights to Errachidia (ERH)
The nearest airport is Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif (ERH), about 130 km and 2 hours by road from Merzouga. Royal Air Maroc flies there from Casablanca (with connections from Europe and the rest of the world), and there have also been flights from Rabat, a Ryanair domestic route from Marrakech and seasonal flights from Paris. Routes and frequencies change, so check the airlines’ websites for your dates.
From Errachidia airport you can take a taxi or a private transfer to Merzouga. The road follows the Ziz Valley with its long palm groves – one of the most beautiful drives in the south. Another option is to fly to Ouarzazate or Fes and continue by road.
- Casablanca → Errachidia with Royal Air Maroc
- Marrakech → Errachidia (Ryanair, check current schedule)
- Errachidia airport → Merzouga: about 2 hours
- Alternative airports: Ouarzazate (5–6 h by road) and Fes (7–8 h)
Grand taxis, private taxis and transfers
Shared grand taxis connect Errachidia, Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga. They are cheap but leave only when all seats are full, so you may wait. A private (hired) grand taxi or a private transfer is faster and much more comfortable, especially after a long flight or bus ride.
We can arrange a reliable private transfer from Errachidia airport, Errachidia or Rissani bus stations, or directly from Marrakech or Fes with stops on the way. Tell us your arrival time and number of travellers and we send you a clear price in advance.
