Late afternoon

The experience

The classic Sahara experience

There is no better way to arrive in the Sahara than on the back of a camel. In the late afternoon you meet your Berber camel guide in Merzouga, climb on and set off into the Erg Chebbi dunes – the highest sand dunes in Morocco, rising up to 150 metres.

As the sun goes down, the caravan stops on a dune so you can watch the sand turn orange, red and purple. You then continue to the camp for mint tea, dinner and an evening of Berber drums around the fire. You choose your comfort level: our standard camp with shared bathrooms or our luxury camp with private ensuite bathrooms.

In the morning, wake up early for sunrise over the dunes, enjoy breakfast and ride (or drive) back to Merzouga.

Planning note

The sunset camel trek comes with your night at our camp: from €40 per person in the standard camp or €70 in the luxury camp. Next morning you can add a quad ride or a 4×4 trip. You pay a 15% deposit by PayPal and the rest at the camp.

Travelling to Merzouga from Ireland

Coming from Ireland? Here’s how to reach the dunes and what to know before your night in the Sahara.

Getting to camp

Fly direct from Dublin to Marrakech with Ryanair or Aer Lingus in about 3 hours 40 minutes. Merzouga is 7–8 hours by road from Fes and 9–10 from Marrakech; we can arrange your transfer.

Irish passports

No visa needed for stays of up to 90 days. Carry a passport with at least 6 months’ validity to be safe.

Paying for your stay

Our prices are in euros, so there’s no exchange to worry about. The 15% deposit is charged by PayPal and the rest is paid in Merzouga. €1 ≈ 10.95 MAD.

When Irish guests come

February mid-term, Easter and the Halloween mid-term are our busiest weeks for Irish guests. Spring and autumn bring the best weather.

What to pack

Desert nights from December to February can drop near freezing, so pack a warm layer. Bring an adapter: Irish Type G plugs don’t fit Moroccan sockets.

Camel trek tips

Treks leave in the late afternoon for sunset. Wear long trousers, and a light jacket for the ride back at sunrise.
