Travelling to Merzouga from South Africa
Coming from South Africa? Here’s how to reach the dunes and what to know before your night in the Sahara.
Getting to camp
Fly one-stop via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Addis Ababa to Casablanca or Marrakech. Merzouga is 7–8 hours by road from Fes and 9–10 from Marrakech; we can arrange your transfer.
South African passports
South African passport holders need a visa for Morocco. Apply at the Moroccan Embassy in Pretoria well ahead; if you hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa, you may qualify for the 30-day eVisa instead. Your passport needs 6 months’ validity.
Paying for your stay
Prices in rand are a guide; the 15% deposit is charged in euros by PayPal and the rest is paid in Merzouga. R1 ≈ 0.59 MAD.
When South African guests come
Seasons are reversed: your autumn (April) and spring (September–October) holidays match the best desert weather.
What to pack
Over the December holidays, desert nights get cold, so pack a warm layer. Bring an adapter for Type M plugs; two-pin Type C plugs fit Moroccan sockets.
Booking from South Africa
Book your camp once your visa is approved. Send us your flight via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul and we’ll time your pick-up.
